Vintage of Collection Vineyards Was Held in Tsinandali
Vintage was held in Tsinandali, Kakheti, in the collective vineyard of wine company "Shumi", where over 400 grape varieties are presented. Local residents and foreign tourists took part in the vintage.
According to Giorgi Samanishvili, chairman of the National Wine Agency, such activities will promote wine tourism, while the diversity of Georgian wine promotes it's popularization throughout the world.
“Collective plots, which emphasize the diversity of Georgian grape varieties, are especially important for wine tourism development, as tourists are able to get acquainted with Georgian grape varieties, traditional methods of winemaking and culture and history of Georgian wine. This vintage, which is attended by a lot of foreigners, is an important message about Georgian winemaking that we really have the ancient and distinctive tradition of viticulture and winemaking” - stated Giorgi Samanishvili.
According to the director of "Shumi" Akaki Tsopurashvili, the cultivation of the collective vineyard started in 2004 and it contains over 400 varieties of vine from every corner of Georgia.
"The represented grape varieties allow us to provide our guests with information about the many thousand years' history of development of Georgian viticulture. We started to find grape varieties in Kakheti, then in Kartli and in western Georgia - Adjara, Racha, Guria. Recently Meskhuri Terrace was also set up where Meskuri vine varieties were planted. This process is not completed and we hope that the collective plot will be filled” - stated Akaki Tsopurashvili.
After the grape picking, informative tour on the diversity of Georgian wine culture, cuisine and vines was organized for the foreign guests. The tour included baking bread in “Tone”, preparing “Churchkhela”, opening Qvevri and visiting the museum of the company.
