British Wine Professionals Discover Georgian Wines in Kartli and Kakheti
To promote awareness of Georgian wine and support export growth in the UK market, a 12-member group comprising representatives of the British wine trade and Swirl Wine Group visited Georgia on a tour organised by the National Wine Agency and its contractor, Swirl Wine Group.
The guests included HoReCa professionals, sommeliers, wine buyers, importers, distributors and wine retailers. The wine professionals visited Georgian wine producers and wineries in Kartli and Kakheti, where they learned about the centuries-old history, culture and traditions of Georgian winemaking and tasted Georgian wines of various styles.
A tasting of wines produced by members of the Natural Wine Association was held at “Nikalas Marani” in the village of Kardenakhi, Gurjaani Municipality, Kakheti, where the guests had the opportunity to discover a range of natural wines.
As part of the tour, a walkaround tasting was held in Tbilisi, featuring approximately 10 Georgian wine producers. They received feedback and recommendations from the British professionals.
To strengthen Georgian wine’s presence in the UK market, the National Wine Agency has been working with Master of Wine Sarah Abbott’s company, Swirl Wine Group LTD, since 2015. During the first nine months of this year, approximately 310,000 litres of wine were exported from Georgia to the United Kingdom, a 43% increase compared with the same period last year.
