As of 23 September, nearly 38,000 tonnes of grapes had been processed across Kakheti. Of these, 28,000 tonnes were of high quality and met the required standards, accounting for approximately 74% of the grapes processed.
“Most of the grapes processed so far are of excellent quality. Only a very small amount, around 147 tonnes out of 38,000 tonnes, was delivered unripe and of poor quality. 74% of our winegrowers have grown high-quality grapes, and I want to thank each of them for it. I thank them because the vast majority of winegrowers truly understand the value of good grapes, well-tended vineyards and quality wine. Our goal is for high-quality grapes to make up 100% of the harvest, so that not a single bunch of grapes in the homeland of wine is unripe or of poor quality,” said Levan Mekhuzla.
Given the heavy rainfall this year, which made it difficult for grapes to develop sufficient sugar content, changes were made on 22 September to the differentiated prices paid for delivered grapes. New prices were set according to sugar content.
Harvest Management Company LLC will purchase grapes grown in Kakheti from individuals under the following conditions:
The price for Saperavi grapes meeting the required standards, with a sugar content of at least 20%, is set at GEL 1.50 per kilogram. Saperavi grapes with a sugar content of 16% to 20% will be priced at GEL 1.00 per kilogram, while those with a sugar content below 16% will be priced at GEL 0.50 per kilogram.
For Rkatsiteli and other wine grape varieties permitted under the Georgian Law on Vine and Wine, grapes with a sugar content of at least 19% will be priced at GEL 1.30 per kilogram. The price will be GEL 0.90 per kilogram for grapes with a sugar content of 16% to 19%, and GEL 0.50 per kilogram for those with a sugar content below 16%.
