“Following consultations with the Government of Georgia and the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Davit Songulashvili, we have decided to revise the purchase prices for grapes.

Taking into account the abundant rainfall this year, which made it difficult for grapes to reach the required sugar content, new prices will be introduced according to their quality parameters,” said Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National Wine Agency, at a briefing held today at the Grape Harvest Coordination Headquarters in Gurjaani.

Specifically:

High-quality grapes meeting the required parameters:
Saperavi with a sugar content of 20 degrees or above - GEL 1.50;
Rkatsiteli and all other grape varieties with a sugar content of 19 degrees or above - GEL 1.30.

Grapes with lower quality parameters:
Saperavi with a sugar content from 16 to 20 degrees - GEL 1;
Rkatsiteli and all other grape varieties with a sugar content from 16 to 19 degrees - GEL 0.90.

“Grapes with a sugar content below 16 degrees are considered non-compliant with the required quality parameters which are suitable neither for wine production nor for distillation and are, in effect, unripe. As you are aware, the State’s position is that not a single kilogramme of grapes in the country should remain unsold. Accordingly, an exception will be made in this case to enable winegrowers to cover their expenses. The purchase price will be GEL 0.50, for hybrid - GEL 0.30.

As for winegrowers who have already delivered their grapes at the previously applicable prices, the amount payable will be recalculated based on the new prices, and they will be compensated for the corresponding difference,” Levan Mekhuzla stated.
