Levan Mekhuzla: "The first step towards ensuring high wine quality has already been taken this year"

"Despite the challenges, 2025 was a successful year for Georgian winemaking sector - a record amount of 340 thousand tons of grapes were processed. We have not processed this amount of grapes in the 21st century. It is also worth noting that after the disruptions caused by the pandemic, Georgian wine is successfully sold on the Asian, and in particular, Chinese, market; the export price of Georgian wine has increased compared to last year," said Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National Wine Agency, summing up the activities of 2025.

According to him, the first step towards ensuring high quality wine was taken this year, when the price of grapes was different during the harvest.

"During the harvest, in the component where the state had to intervene, the main innovation was that we determined a quality indicator and paid a different price for relatively low-quality grapes that were processed into alcohol. This serves the purpose of making the sector even more successful. Georgian wine, in the conditions of fierce competition in the global market, must definitely be special, of the highest quality, with unique properties, and the foundation of all this is the vineyard and the grapes. Next year, this mechanism will be even stricter and more refined," the Chairman of the Agency noted.

According to him, the amendments to the Law of Georgia on Vine and Wine serve to strengthen the international positions of Georgian wine, one of which envisages approval for the cultivation of an industrial vineyard starting next year, which will be issued by the LEPL National Wine Agency.

"The mentioned change will further strengthen the positions of Georgian wine in the international market in the long and medium term. When cultivating a vineyard, the soil, seedlings, and exposure must be selected correctly. These changes apply only to commercial vineyards and do not apply to those already cultivated. They also do not apply to those who plan to cultivate a vineyard for personal consumption. The conditions for cultivating a new, commercial vineyard will be stated in the relevant normative act; if taken into account, no one will have a problem obtaining consent," - noted Levan Mekhuzla.
