Levan Mekhuzla: “Our goal is to present Georgian wine of the highest quality on international markets”

This week, the Government of Georgia reviewed and approved the draft law “On Amendments to the Law of Georgia on Vine and Wine”, the purpose of which is to promote the production of high-quality, competitive grape-based alcoholic beverages, as well as to take into account the requirements of local and international markets necessary for their realisation. The new regulation also envisages that, starting from next year, consent for the establishment of commercial vineyards will be issued by the LEPL National Wine Agency.
“Consumption on the global wine market has relatively declined; there is strong competition and overproduction worldwide. Therefore, we believe that the spontaneous establishment of vineyards, which has been observed over the past decade, must be regulated. The emphasis should be placed on the quality of the final product — the wine. Starting from the soil, exposure, location, variety, rootstock — everything must comply with the standards that will allow us to obtain a quality harvest, which will be used to produce the best wine. The aim of the legislative changes is to present on international markets wine of the highest quality, produced from grapes of the highest quality,” said Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National Wine Agency.
According to the Chairman of the National Wine Agency, in order to ensure wine quality, special attention will be paid to the condition of the grapes during the 2026 harvest.
“Despite the fact that there were two different prices during this year’s harvest, there are still grape growers who try to place the emphasis on quantity rather than on condition and quality. There were cases when grapes of very low quality were delivered, for example with sugar content of 15–16%, which is unacceptable even for the production of alcohol. Therefore, next year a new price category will be introduced — grapes with a sugar content lower than 17% will be purchased at a significantly lower price. I would like to advise and urge all grape growers to place maximum emphasis on quality, not quantity. Under the conditions of Georgia, achieving a sugar content of 17% in grapes is easily attainable,” mentioned the Chairman of the National Wine Agency.
