The number of appellation of origin wines has increased to 33, which indicates the diversity of Georgian wine and is especially important for its promotion and growth of export potential.
"Imereti Wine Association" Ltd. applied to the National Intellectual Property Center "Sakpatenti" with the request to register the geographical indication of the wine "Sazano's Otskhanuri". The National Wine Agency participated in the preparation of the specification for the production of this wine and other technical issues related to registration within the framework of the "Program for the Development of the Georgian Appellation of Origin System and Promotion of the Protection of Georgian Wine Appellations".
"Sazano's Otskhanuri" is a red dry wine; the microzone includes the villages of Terjola municipality: Zeda Sazano, Skande, Mujireti, Chikhory, Delta district, Shimshilakedi, as well as the villages of Zestafoni municipality: Kveda Sazano, Tklapivake and Shimshilakedi. The microzone is located at an altitude of 120-420 meters above sea level. Wine "Sazano's Otskhanuri" can only be made from Otskhanuri Sapere grapes grown in the Sazano microzone, and the use of other varieties is not allowed, however, the addition of 5% Saperavi grown only in the same microzone is allowed.
Sazano's Otskhanuri is made by complete alcoholic fermentation of the must, in Qvevri (Churi) or in a stainless steel tank.
Imereti ranks first in Western Georgia in terms of vineyard area. Imereti wines are made from grapes grown on mountain slopes and inclines and are distinguished by their high quality. These wines are mainly of moderate strength, characterized by tenderness, completeness and a peculiar aroma.
Three appellation of origin wines are registered in Imereti: Sviri, Obcha and Sazano's Otskhanuri.
The following protected appellation of origin wines are registered in Georgia: Kindzmarauli, Manavi, Kakheti, Napareuli, Teliani, Mukuzani, Tsinandali, Akhasheni, Gurjaani, Khvanchkara, Ateni, Sviri, Vasisubani, Kardenakhi, Tibaani, Tvishi, Kvareli, Kotekhi, Khashmi Saperavi, Bolnisi, Salhino Ojaleshi, Akhmeta, Tsarafi, Akhoebi, Magraani Kisi, Okureshi Usakhelauri, Zegaani, Asuretuli Shala, Okami, Obcha, Lechkhumi, Racha and Sazano's Otskhanuri.
