This year, the approximately 336,000 tons of grapes processed in the viticulture regions of Georgia is the highest record in the last 30 years. Up to 22,000 grape-growing farmers across the country have harvested the crop. The income of grape growers reached 475 million GEL. More than 500 wineries were involved in the grape receiving and processing.
The grape harvest has been fully completed throughout Georgia, except for the Lechkhumi region, where the harvest will be completed in the coming days.
The largest share of processed grapes, up to 327 thousand tons, comes from Kakheti, which is also a record figure. The income from the sale of grapes in Kakheti reached 432 million GEL.
According to the government's decision, subsidies were no longer issued to wine enterprises in the Kakheti region this year. The state enterprise Ltd. "Harvest Management Company" purchased surplus grapes at a differentiated price depending on the quality: Saperavi grapes grown in the Kakheti region - for 1.50 GEL, other wine varieties permitted by the Law of Georgia "On Vine and Wine" - for 1.20 GEL, non-standard and damaged/or diseased grapes - for 1.00 GEL.
This year, a record amount of up to 3,000 tons of various grape varieties has also been processed in Racha, the largest share of which is Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli. More than 1,400 winegrowers harvested the crop, and the income from the sale of grapes reached 23.5 million GEL.
In the Racha region, a subsidy program was implemented by the government to stimulate the private sector. The recipient of the subsidy is any company that has purchased and processed at least 3 tons of Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes grown in the "Khvanchkara" microzone and paid the winegrower at least 8 GEL. The amount of the state subsidy received by wine companies in the Racha-Lechkhumi region is 4 GEL for both 1 kg of Alexandrouli and 1 kg of Mujuretuli grapes.
