With the support of the National Wine Agency of Georgia, Georgian amber wine was presented at the Orange Glou Fair exhibition in the United States.
To enhance the awareness and popularity of Georgian amber wine on the U.S. market, about 15 wines from eight Georgian wineries were showcased at the international wine exhibition Orange Glou Fair held in New York City, organized by the National Wine Agency of Georgia and the American marketing company Colangelo & Partners. The National Wine Agency was one of the sponsors of the festival.
The Orange Glou Fair brought together participants from seven countries — Georgia, the United States, Austria, France, Hungary, Slovenia, and Germany. Around 40 companies presented approximately 150 wines.
Since 2022, the Orange Glou Fair has been held annually, traditionally bringing together producers of amber/orange wines from various countries around the world. As part of the festival, a special tasting of Georgian amber wines was also organized.
“Amber wine was first produced in Georgia 8,000 years ago and was introduced to the rest of the world about 30 years ago by two Italian winemakers — Josko Gravner and Stanko Radikon — who were eager to study this ancient winemaking method. Today, there are several thousand winemakers producing amber wines alongside other styles,” — stated the official release of the Orange Glou Fair.
Georgian amber wine — which, from a technological perspective, refers to wine fermented and aged on the grape skins — is officially recognized under the name “wine made by prolonged maceration on the pomace (chacha)” and has been added to the list of special wines by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). Previously, the OIV list of special wines included only seven categories: “Sparkling,” “Semi-sparkling,” “Fortified,” “Liqueur,” “Naturally Sweet,” “Ice Wine,” and “Wine Aged Under a Yeast Film.” The “wine made by prolonged maceration on the pomace” became the eighth special wine recognized by the OIV.
Over the course of one week, Georgian wine was featured at two major events in New York — the Orange Glou Fair and the natural wine festival Karakterre, giving thousands of wine professionals and consumers the opportunity to taste Georgian wine.
The United States represents one of the strategic export markets for Georgian wine. Since 2013, with the support of the National Wine Agency, targeted marketing activities have significantly contributed to the growth of awareness and exports of Georgian wine in the U.S.
The United States is one of the highest-value markets for Georgian wine. The average price per liter of Georgian wine on the U.S. market is around USD 6, which reflects both the high quality of Georgian wine and the growing demand for it.
