To promote the awareness and growth of Georgian wine exports on the UK market, a 12-member delegation of sommeliers, wine importers, media representatives, and members of Swirl Wine Group from Great Britain visited Georgia, organized by the National Wine Agency and its contractor company Swirl Wine Group.
The British guests visited Georgian wine-producing companies and wineries in Kartli, Imereti, and Racha.
“Although I have visited Georgia many times over the past ten years, this is my first visit to Imereti and Racha. The wines of Western Georgia are remarkable for their lightness, which is very positive — they have many bright aromas and harmoniously complement the more complex wines of the East.
The professionalism and dedication clearly evident in the winemaking of Western Georgia are fantastic. We tasted wonderful wines — white, rosé, amber, and red. The progress achieved in Racha, Imereti, and Kartli is truly exceptional, and I believe we will see an increasing amount of these wines imported into the UK.
We will see Georgia in a very strong position with its Saperavi, amber, and red wines, as Georgia can offer the world a wide diversity of flavors. Along with the rich and intense Kakhetian and bright Kartli aromas, the wines discovered in Imereti and Racha are perfection,” – noted Sarah Abbott, Master of Wine and Head of Swirl Wine Group.
In addition to the regional tour, a special “Walk-around Tasting” was held in Tbilisi for British wine professionals, featuring various wines from 16 Georgian wine-producing companies.
With the support of the National Wine Agency, this was already the second tour for British wine professionals this year.
The United Kingdom is one of Europe’s largest wine-importing and wine-consuming countries, which, since 2014, has emerged as one of the most potentially growing strategic markets for Georgian wine exports. To establish a presence on the UK market, the National Wine Agency has been cooperating with the company Swirl Wine Group LTD, founded by Master of Wine Sarah Abbott, since 2015.
