“Georgia is a true treasure trove of wine,” – Fongyee Walker, Master of Wine from China.
With the support of the National Wine Agency and organized by the renowned wine industry consultancy “Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting,” an 11-member group of wine professionals from the People’s Republic of China visited Georgia.
As part of the tour, the group—which included wine professionals and importers—visited wineries in Kartli, Imereti, and Kakheti, where they tasted Georgian wines of various styles.
In Tbilisi, a special Walkaround Tasting was held for the guests, featuring wines from 16 Georgian wine producers.
“Georgian wine truly has great potential in China, primarily because it offers such a diverse selection of distinctive and unique flavors. While my Chinese group and I were traveling in Georgia, one of the wines that particularly stood out to us was Qindzmarauli, as it has an aroma that, in our shared opinion, many Chinese consumers would really enjoy. I believe Georgian wine has tremendous prospects in China if we introduce people to it, teach them about its history, and share its variety of flavors. Georgia is a true treasure trove of wine that Chinese consumers have yet to discover,” said Fongyee Walker, Master of Wine and leading expert at Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting.
As part of their visit to Georgia, Fongyee Walker and Edward Ragg, another Master of Wine from Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting, met with the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, Davit Songhulashvili. The parties discussed ways to promote the awareness and growth of Georgian wine exports in the Chinese market.
It is noteworthy that China is one of Georgia’s key strategic markets. Since 2013, an active marketing campaign has been underway to increase the visibility and exports of Georgian wine there. China has firmly established itself among the top five countries importing Georgian wine. According to data from the first six months of this year, 1.7 million liters of Georgian wine were exported to China, which represents a 51% increase compared to the same period last year.
