With the support of the National Wine Agency, a presentation of Georgian wine was held in Shanghai.
The Chairman of the National Wine Agency, Levan Mekhuzla, attended one of the world’s most prestigious wine competitions, the “Shanghai International Wine Challenge” (SIWC) in Shanghai. As part of the five-day event, one of the competition days was dedicated exclusively to Georgian wine.
The 19th edition of the competition has been held annually since 2006, with the aim of showcasing the highest quality wines from around the world and fostering international trade and cultural exchange in the Chinese market. A total of 200 Georgian wines were presented at the competition.
“SIWC is a highly important platform for wine producers, where they have the opportunity to present their products to wine professionals, the media, and consumers. The winning wines receive extensive media coverage and gain widespread recognition. Last year, the competition featured over 500 wines from 20 different countries around the world, including France, Spain, Hungary, and Australia,” said Levan Mekhuzla.
The competition is organized by the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone. The panel of judges consists of around 80 wine professionals, and all wines are evaluated through blind tasting, which ensures maximum objectivity and transparency of the process. The winning wines are awarded in the following categories: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Trophy.
As part of the event, a Georgian wine masterclass and tasting were also held, led by the Chairman of the National Wine Agency, Levan Mekhuzla, and the Chair of the Agency’s State Tasting Commission, Ana Godabrelidze. The presentation of Georgian wine was attended by wine professionals, importers, distributors, media representatives, and consumers.
It is noteworthy that China is one of the key strategic markets for Georgian wine. Since 2013, an active marketing campaign has been underway to increase the awareness and export of Georgian wine there. China has firmly established itself among the top five export destinations for Georgian wine. According to data from January to May of this year, 1.4 million liters of Georgian wine were exported to China, representing a 65% increase compared to the same period last year.
With the support of the National Wine Agency, this year Georgian wine was showcased at exhibitions in the People’s Republic of China, including the “Fine Wine Hotel Exhibition”, “The China Food & Drinks Fair,” “RAW Wine Shanghai”, and “Interwine China 2025”.
