During the meeting with the Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, David Songhulashvili, the parties discussed the development of the viticulture and winemaking sector in Georgia, the increase in global recognition of Georgian wine, and the diversification of markets.
According to the Chairman of the National Wine Agency, Levan Mekhuzla, John Barker is one of the most authoritative figures in the wine industry, whose support has often been a key factor in crucial decisions for Georgian wine.
"The activities of OIV include providing recommendations on wine production, implementing international standards in the industry, developing sustainable development strategies, promoting quality production, and strengthening wine markets. The visit of the Secretary General of the Organization will make a significant contribution to further strengthening the reputation of Georgian wine and will better highlight the centuries-old traditions, achievements, and potential of Georgian viticulture and winemaking," noted Levan Mekhuzla.
During his visit to Georgia, John Barker visited wine cellars in Kartli and Imereti, where he learned about the traditions and culture of Georgian wine production. The Secretary General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) visited the Jighaura perennial crops research and demonstration base of the Agricultural Scientific-Research Center of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, as well as the Agricultural University of Georgia and the Georgian National Museum.
The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) is an intergovernmental organization with 51 member countries, including Georgia. The organization regulates the vine and wine sector, establishes relevant standards, and supports member countries in the development of viticulture and winemaking.
