The number of wines with protected designation of origin has increased to 32, which highlights the diversity of Georgian wine and is particularly important for its promotion and the growth of its export potential.
Wines with protected designation of origin registered in Georgia are: Kindzmarauli, Manavi, Kakheti, Napareuli, Teliani, Mukuzani, Tsinandali, Akhasheni, Gurjaani, Khvanchkara, Ateni, Sviri, Vazisubani, Kardenakhi, Tibaani, Tvishi, Kvareli, Kotekhi, Khashmi’s Saperavi, Bolnisi, Salkhino’s Ojaleshi, Akhmeta, Tsarapi, Akhoebi, Maghraani’s Kisi, Okureshi’s Usakhelouri, Zegaani, Asuretuli Shala, Okami, Obcha, Lechkhumi, and Racha.
The National Wine Agency participated in the preparation of production specifications and other technical matters related to the registration of these wines within the framework of the program “Development of the Georgian Wine Designation of Origin System and Support for the Protection of Georgian Wine Indications.”
The wine "Lechkhumi" is a wine with protected designation of origin.
The wine "Lechkhumi" has been added to the wines with protected designation of origin. The wine "Lechkhumi" is a dry wine, which can be either white or amber. The microzone is located in Lechkhumi and includes the wine-growing areas of the Rioni, Lajanuri, and Tskhenistskali valleys, which are within the administrative boundaries of the Tsageri municipality, offering favorable soil and climatic conditions for viticulture.
The wine "Lechkhumi" can only be made from the Colchian variety of grapes grown within the corresponding microzone. The use of other grape varieties is prohibited.
In order to register the geographical indication of the wine "Lechkhumi," the National Wine Agency applied to the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia, "Sakpatenti."
The wine "Racha" is a wine with protected designation of origin. The wine "Racha" has been added to the wines with protected designation of origin.
"Racha" is a red dry wine, ranging from light to dark crimson. In addition to Oni and Ambrolauri, the Racha microzone includes the following villages within these two municipalities: Khvanchkara, Tseti, Kvatskhuti, Sadmeli, Gvriara, Bostana, Didi Chorgo, Patara Chorgo, Mtsvane Tola, Pirveli Tola, Chrebalo, Kvemo Chkvishi, Zemo Zhoskha, Kvemo Zhoskha, K’vishari, Gvardia, Bareuli, Ghadishi, Baji, Bugeuli, Saketsia, Jvarisa, Itsa, Kvemo Krikhi, Akhaltsopeli, Gori, Khimshi, Abanoeti, Dzirageuli, Mukhli, Nigvzara, Zudali, Shardometi, and Sori.
The wine "Racha" can only be made from the Alexander’s and Mujuretuli grape varieties grown in the Racha microzone. The use of Cabistoni, Dzelshavi, and Saperavi grape varieties is also allowed, up to 15% in total, from the same microzone.
In order to register the geographical indication, the Wine Growers' Association "Khvanchkara" applied to the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia, "Sakpatenti."
