03.06.2024

The festival, supported by the National Wine Agency, was held for the second time on the initiative of the association "Gvino Bolnisi". Approximately 50 wine producers from various regions of Georgia participated in the event.  The aforementioned festival is the sole event in Georgia where wine producers with a Protected Designation of Origin participate.
The Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Yuri Nozadze, extended his best wishes for the success of the festival and emphasized the significance of initiatives aimed at promoting Georgian wine.
,,The primary objective of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture is to enhance the diversification of Georgian wine markets and identify potential alternative markets. To accomplish this objective, festivals such as this one, which serve to promote the appreciation of wine, hold significant importance. The Bolnisi PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Wine Festival distinguishes itself from other festivals by exclusively showcasing wines with Protected Designation of Origin. Nevertheless, it also serves as a platform to promote both Georgian wine as a whole and, naturally, origin wines. I hope that the festival will adhere to a traditional format and be held annually. The Ministry and the National Wine Agency, on their part, will continue to provide ongoing support for the festival.“, - Yuri Nozadze stated.
The chairman of the National Wine Agency Levan Mekhuzla, the Deputy Chairman Zurab Vacharadze and the Director of the Scientific Research Center, Levan Ujmajuridz eattended the festival.
Alongside the local population, specially invited sommeliers, wine experts, and representatives from the Horeca sector attended the festival.
Currently, 29 local wines with protected designations of origin are registered in Georgia, which indicates the diversity and uniqueness of Georgian grape varieties and wines.
Within the context of the festival, a local wine competition was conducted in adherence to the regulations set forth by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). Esteemed jury members with international expertise were tasked with discerning the recipients of the gold and silver awards among the competing wines.  Jaba Dzimistarashvili, the recipient of the prestigious title "Best Sommelier of Georgia 2021," presided over the panel of judges. The distinguished jury also included Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National Wine Agency.
Out of the 88 samples submitted to the competition from 51 companies, 10 wines were awarded gold medals, while 38 received silver medals. The winning wines were ceremoniously presented with their awards at the festival, creating a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere.
It is important to mention that the presenter of the Bolnisi PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) Wine Festival is the company "Aremji". The festival is supported by the Bolnisi Municipality City Hall, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the National Wine Agency, the Bolnisi Agrocenter, and the partner is the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia – "Sakpatenti".
