Georgian Qvevri wine producer cellars are showcasing their products in Portugal for the very first time
The international exhibition of natural wines - "Simplesmente Vinho" will take place in Porto, Portugal from February 23-25. Georgia is Georgia is represented at the mentioned exhibition with a special status as the homeland of wine!
With the initiative and financial assistance provided by the National Wine Agency, a total of 11 Georgian Qvevri wine producers are participating in the exhibition. These esteemed companies include Baia's Wine, Iberieli, Lapati, Okro’s wines, Ori Marani, Lagazi, LisiWine-Meskhishvili Winery, Bua Wines, Chona's Marani, Nikoladzeebis Marani, and Tevza wine. Within the framework of the exhibition, three extensive tastings of Georgian wine have been scheduled for wine professionals and trade representatives. The presentation of Georgian wine at the aforementioned events will be organized with the support of the Embassy of Georgia in the Republic of Portugal.
One of the primary functions of the National Wine Agency is to facilitate the advancement of Qvevri wine production. With the financial and organizational support of the National Wine Agency, Qvevri wine producer companies participate in important international exhibitions, their products are presented at specialized tastings in strategic wine markets for Georgia: USA, United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Baltic States, China, South Korea and Japan. Furthermore, through the generous financial and organizational backing of the National Wine Agency, visits to Qvevri wine cellars are arranged for esteemed wine professionals and commercial representatives of the country. This initiative presents them with a unique platform to promote their products and establish valuable business partnerships.
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of exporting Georgian Qvevri wines to traditional winemaking countries such as Italy, Spain, France, and others. Furthermore, the increased awareness of Qvevri wine production has piqued the interest of other countries.
It should be noted that the traditional method of making Qvevri wine was awarded the status of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. Additionally, in 2021, Qvevri was granted the status of protected geographical indication.
