Amendments of the existing legislative framework have been introduced to the production of competitive wines and alcoholic beverages
Amendments to the existing legislative framework have been introduced to make wine and alcoholic beverages competitive for local and international markets.
In particular, the amendments to the technical regulations for the production of wine and alcoholic beverages provided for the determination of the ratio of different parameters, which is important to detect possible counterfeiting. From those the most particularly noteworthy is the examination of the stable carbon isotope ratio. In order to determine the origin of alcoholic beverages, it is important to determine the C13 and C12 ratio of carbon isotopes. Based on the ratio of these specific isotopes, it is possible to determine whether the products are of grape origin, which shows the detection of falsification.
The National Wine Agency started testing the carbon stable isotope ratio of alcohol in 2019, and until then, the Georgian side has benefited from the relevant EU and export regulations.
The changes also provide the determination of the ratio of glucose and fructose in the grape composition of alcoholic fermentation, which is particularly important in determining whether naturally occurring semi-sweet wines (Kindzmarauli, Akhasheni, Khvanchkara, Tvishi) are naturally semi-sweet or artificially sweetened.
In particular, naturally produced sucrose in grapes should not be more than 1g/L more in semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet wines. In case the result differentiates from the figure, it is assumed that the wine was artificially sweetened.
The above amendments have been made to the following technical regulations: "On the general rules for the production of wine and the list of permitted processes, materials and substances" and "On the general rules for the production of alcoholic beverages of grape origin and on the list of permitted processes, materials and substances".
