The First Saperavi International Competition was organized in Tbilisi by the association "Georgian Wine", supported by the National Wine Agency. Up to 200 wines of 87 both large producers and small and medium family cellars were represented at the competition. The 12-man jury includes Georgian and foreign experts.
According to the chair of the jury, famous British journalist and wine writer Andrew Jefford, Georgia produces quality wines and the wines represented at the competition were impressive.
“The quality of the wines that Georgia is producing today is another compelling reason to be here. We’re here to taste Saperavi, which is one of the worlds greatest red varieties, wines that are terrifically exiting, never less than exiting, they have unpredictable character very often, always full of personality, in the world where wines can sometimes lack personality, so, that’s a wonderful privilege to be here and taste and taste Saperavis,”-stated he.
According to Andrew Jefford, besides Saperavi, there are other wonderful wines in Georgia, which he had tasted during his previous visit in Georgia.
According to the assessment of the Chairman of the National Wine Agency, jury member Levan Mekhuzla, The First Saperavi International Competition was successful. "It is important that the competition was international, where Saperavi wines produced in other countries were represented together with Georgian Saperavi wines. The Georgian vine variety Saperavi is one of the best representatives of the world's red varieties. Saperavi is one of the main grape varieties of Georgia, which is gradually getting equal to such varieties as Cabernet, Merlot, etc. "- noted Levan Mekhuzla.
The winners of the competition will be known in the nearest future.
