The 9th International Wine Award 2017

The International Wine and Spirits Exhibition ‘’WinExpo Georgia 2017’’ hosted the 9th International Wine Award 2017 on June 9-10, 2017.

Large companies, as well as small, family wine cellars, totally 43 companies took part and presented 164 different types of wine at the contest. On June 10, the awards were presented in six categories: gold (26 medals), silver (36), bronze (84) medals and international diplomas.

The best wines of the year included \"Saperavi Georgica 2013\"(Red Dry) produced by the Wine Company Shumi and \"Kvevri Green 2016\" (Qvevri white dry) produced by the Company Kvevri Wine Cellar. The Minister of Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili, the Chairman of the National Wine Agency, Giorgi Samanishvili and jury members awarded the winners.

As the Minister of Agriculture, Levan Davitashvili noted, such competitions and exhibitions aim to boost the popularization of Georgian wine. \"The number of participants and winners in this year\'s competition is really impressive. Apparently, wine sector is developing rapidly, new wine companies are created, modern technologies are introduced and high quality wine is produced in Georgia. It should be noted, that the jury members of the competition are the world\'s best wine experts and specialists, therefore, their opinions and assessments are important for us as this will further lead to promote the Georgian wine in the international market, \"said Levan Davitashvili.

For the first time this year, the best wines were awarded by special prize - \"Trophy\" (TROPHY), the National Wine Agency awarded following wines:

• Green (2015) - Ivane Mukhran-Batoni Gold Medal;

• Best Red Dry Wine - Aleksandre Chavchavadze Gold Medal;

• Saperavi Georgica (2013)- Wine Company Shumi

• The Best Red semi-sweet wine - Dmitry Kipiani Gold Medal ‘’Tolibashi’’; (2016)

• The Best White semi-sweet wine - Dimitri Kipiani Gold Medal;

• Best White Qvevri Wine (2016) - Zakaria Jorjadze Gold Medal;

• Best Red Qvevri Wine - Zakaria Jorjadze Gold Medal.

• Saperavi (2015) - traditionally was presented by Company Batono

The wines have been evaluated by jury composed of enologists, international experts and specialists. The jury was presented by the Chairman of the Jury, Master of Wine - Tim Atkin (Mr. Tim Atkin MW - UK), Master of Wine - Kenichi Ohashi (Kenichi Ohashi MW - Japan), Master Sommelier, Isa Bali (Isa Bal MS, Master Sommelier - Turkey), enologist - Mikheil Meskhi (enologist, Georgia),Wine Expert - Sarah Ebot (Great Britain), Oenologist -Gogi Dakishvili (Georgia).

According to the Chairman of the Jury, Master of Wine - Tim Atkin, Georgian wine has limitless potential, thereby, he noted, that the number of new companies participating in the competition has been increasing annually and wine sector in Georgia is on the right path and developing rapidly. On June 9-11, The International Wine and Spirits Exhibition WinExpo Georgia 2017 is being held.

This year 11 countries: Georgia, Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine participate in the exhibition. 97 companies present more than 170 products.
